If you have worked with us before, you know that we always recommend that you purchase travel insurance to protect your travel investment. We all have stories of clients that have needed to file a claim because they had to cancel their trip after final payment or something happened while they were traveling. Now I have a personal story to share with you about why you shouldn’t think twice about getting insurance.
Recently I attended a conference in South Africa. I had done the trip before, knew that the likelihood of getting stomped by an elephant or mauled by a lion, and surviving, was not likely, and had it in my mind that I was not going to purchase travel insurance. A few days prior to leaving my mom urged me to get coverage, just in case. Not one to go against my mothers wishes, I purchased a plan for $242 to cover my non-refundable trip costs, packed my bags, and boarded my flight.
Fast forward three days and wouldn’t you know, the unthinkable happens. I loose a filling and crack one of my molars. With a sharp edge, growing sensitivity, and a fear of getting stuck in the bush on safari with a tribe “doctor” as my only option, I found a dentist that could take me the same day in Cape Town during my conference lunch break. I arrived at the dentist and 1 hour later, I had a new 3D filling, a numb face, and a bill for 10500 Rand (about $850). I happily paid my bill and went back to the conference. It was by far on of the best dentist experiences I have ever had.
When I returned home I filed a claim with Allianz, our preferred travel insurance company at WhirlAway. The claim process was easy. It was done online, all I had to do was upload my invoice from the dentist. I had a reimbursement check for $750 (maximum allowed for emergency dental) within one week. So at the end of the day my $242 investment saved me $408. Totally worth it! I also have the contact info of an amazing dentist that I will provide to all of my clients traveling to Cape Town, should a dental emergency arise.
